This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to write nonfiction material in a range of forms and to use basic editing and proofreading skills to refine work.

It applies to individuals who draw on a range of information sources and writing techniques to produce nonfiction materials in variety of forms and delivery media.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Assessment Tasks

Copy and paste from the following data to produce each assessment task. Write these in plain English and spell out how, when and where the task is to be carried out, under what conditions, and what resources are needed. Include guidelines about how well the candidate has to perform a task for it to be judged satisfactory.
Copy and paste from the following performance criteria to create an observation checklist for each task. When you have finished writing your assessment tool every one of these must have been addressed, preferably several times in a variety of contexts. To ensure this occurs download the assessment matrix for the unit; enter each assessment task as a column header and place check marks against each performance criteria that task addresses.

Determine appropriate grammar, spelling and punctuation for the intended audience 
Develop timeline for completion of the nonfiction material based on requirements 
Prepare resources needed to produce the required materials 
Plan writing task to reflect the publication media, scope, structure and content of the nonfiction material 
Research and gather information to ensure that the requirements of the writing task will be met 
Use safe work practices including addressing ergonomic requirements when undertaking writing tasks 
Use writing techniques and structural elements appropriate for the publication type to create draft nonfiction material 
Perform basic editing of draft to meet the requirements of the nonfiction material 
Perform basic proofreading of draft to meet the requirements of the nonfiction material 
Check content complies with copyright and intellectual property requirements 
Confirm the draft is appropriate for the purpose, publication media and intended audience 
Seek feedback from relevant stakeholders and establish the method by which feedback will be provided 
Discuss and confirm any modifications with relevant people 
Complete agreed modifications and produce final draft within required timelines
